Meet Mohammed Irfan, Founder & CEO of Zupper, who is building BlendCommerce to help retailers, brands and suppliers grow through technology, commerce, financing and AI.
India's retail and MSME ecosystem powers millions of businesses, yet much of it still operates through disconnected networks. Retailers often struggle to discover the right products, suppliers and business opportunities, while brands and suppliers face difficulties reaching reliable partners. Access to financing, technology and meaningful business insights remains uneven, making growth harder despite strong market demand. The challenge is not that commerce is missing—it happens every day—but that the ecosystem is fragmented. This gap created an opportunity for a connected approach, one that Zupper set out to build. Behind that vision was founder Mohammed Irfan, whose own journey had prepared him to understand these realities from the ground up.
Mohammed Irfan grew up in Giddalur, a small town in Andhra Pradesh's Prakasam district, where a middle-class upbringing taught him humility, trust and the value of relationships. Watching local businesses thrive through reputation and long-term connections gave him an early understanding of commerce beyondtweb technology or large infrastructure. Naturally introverted, he gradually developed confidence through education and professional experience. His career later took him to companies including Reliance AJIO, IndiaMART and ReshaMandi, where he worked closely with businesses across different regions. Those experiences gradually revealed a pattern that would shape the next phase of his career.
How Years in Commerce Revealed a Bigger Opportunity
Working across multiple organisations exposed Irfan to different parts of India's commerce ecosystem, but the conversations with retailers, brands and suppliers often sounded familiar. Businesses consistently faced challenges in accessing products, technology, reliable partners and growth opportunities. The issue was not limited to one sector or one region. Instead, commerce itself remained disconnected despite its scale. Rather than viewing technology as a replacement for traditional trade, Irfan saw an opportunity to strengthen existing relationships through a connected ecosystem. Over time, this thinking evolved into BlendCommerce—a philosophy that blends traditional trade with digital commerce, financing, technology and AI to help businesses grow through a single connected ecosystem. This belief became the foundation of Zupper and eventually attracted Abhiram as co-founder to help build the vision further.
After nearly 14 years in corporate leadership, Irfan made the difficult decision to leave behind career stability and start from scratch. Coming from a family that valued secure employment, entrepreneurship required both personal conviction and family support. Building alongside established players such as Udaan and Bijnis meant entering an intensely competitive market with limited resources. Early technology estimates exceeded ₹1.5 crore, making outsourced development unrealistic. Instead of stepping back, the team invested in building technology capabilities internally while simultaneously earning the trust of businesses. Those early decisions tested both patience and resilience, but they also strengthened confidence in the larger mission.
The strongest validation did not come from revenue or rapid expansion. It came from conversations with retailers, brands and suppliers who immediately recognised the problem Zupper was trying to solve. Businesses openly shared their challenges and welcomed the idea of a more connected way of working. Rather than replacing traditional commerce, they viewed technology as a practical tool to improve efficiency and discover new opportunities. That market response reinforced the team's belief that they were solving an existing problem rather than creating one. The journey also gained momentum when angel investors backed the vision with an initial investment of $30K.
Building More Than a Platform
For the Zupper team, success extends beyond creating another B2B marketplace. Their long-term goal is to build commerce infrastructure that helps India's retailers, brands and MSMEs operate more efficiently in a digital economy. The company combines commerce, financing solutions and AI-powered business insights to help businesses make smarter decisions while staying connected with the wider ecosystem. It believes the future will not be defined by online versus offline commerce, but by connected commerce where businesses can discover opportunities, improve operations and grow together. That vision continues to shape every stage of the company's development.
Building Zupper transformed Irfan as much as it shaped the company. Although his background was rooted in growth and operations, entrepreneurship pushed him into technology, product thinking and user experience. Working closely with the engineering team gave him a deeper appreciation of how ideas become practical products through thoughtful design and continuous problem-solving. Along the way, he developed a genuine interest in UI and UX while learning to view every decision through the customer's experience. Looking back, his biggest lesson remains simple:
meaningful companies emerge by solving everyday problems that people have accepted for far too long.
